Paraguay is a success on deforestation goals
According to Forest Declaration Assessment, the country is the only one among a list of ten that achieved their goals of reducing deforestation
A new report from the Forest Declaration Assessment highlights that Paraguay is an example for the rest of South America. The country accomplished a reduction of deforestation in 2023, while the world increased the problem to 6,37 millions of hectares, says La Nacion. Paraguay is the only country in a list of ten with an urgent situation that achieved the goal.
There are ten countries listed in the report with the greatest absolute areas of deforestation: Brazil, Indonesia, Bolivia, Congo, Malaysia, Peru, Paraguay, Laos, Argentina, and Cameroon. Paraguay achieved a reduction of 160,000 hectares, which represents 32%.
The document also shows that Brazil did not achieve the goal of 1,5 million hectares, even though it had a reduction of 1,94 million hectares. The results of Paraguay reveal that there is a pathway to end deforestation by 2030 and meet the goals pledge at COP26, in Glasgow. The deal was signed by 140 countries.
